Bible commentaries

7 October 2026
Paul's preaching encounters difficulties; not everyone accepts it because they see contradictions in it. He feels obliged to defend himself: "In a private meeting with those recognized as leaders, I presented to them the Gospel that I preach among the Gentiles, to make sure that everything I had done, and was still doing, was not in vain." This entailed an approach to things that some at times accepted, while at other times they were ashamed of it and acted hypocritically. Paul is not accepted publicly: are we currently experiencing this same lack of acceptance in certain aspects of faith? What makes it most blameworthy?

Lord, may I not turn what should be flexible into something rigid, nor make what is essential into something relative.

Saints of the Day

7 October 2026
Today, October 7th, we celebrate the feast day of Our Lady of the Rosary; Saint Augustus, abbot; and Saint Ernest, abbot and martyr.

Our Lady of the Rosary

The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary was instituted by Pope Pius V to give thanks for the naval victory of Christians over the Turks at the Battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571, attributed to the help of the Virgin Mary, who was invoked through the prayer of the Rosary. Through the repetition of prayer and meditation on its mysteries, the Rosary contemplates the main moments in the life of Jesus Christ and Mary's role in the history of salvation. Confraternities of the Rosary have for centuries been an important reference point for popular piety in our region and have contributed to spreading this Marian devotion.

Saint Augustus of Bourges, abbot

He was abbot of the Monastery of Saint-Symphorien in Bourges. According to tradition, he was miraculously cured through the intercession of Saint Martin from a serious illness that had paralyzed his hands and feet. He stood out for his life of prayer and service to the community. His memory is especially honored for his dedication to monastic life and the impetus he gave to the monastery. He died around the year 560.

Saint Ernest, abbot and martyr

He was born in Switzerland in the 12th century and served as abbot of the Benedictine Monastery of Zwiefalten, in the present-day German state of Baden-Württemberg, between 1141 and 1146. He resigned from his post to participate in the Second Crusade, and once the campaign ended, he devoted himself to preaching in Persia and Arabia. According to tradition, he was captured by Muslims, tortured, and killed in Mecca in 1148.

Rule of Saint Benedict

7 October 2026
Keeping Silent to Know How to Speak. Silence should not be the result of an external imposition, nor an bitter or indifferent void, but a space of freedom and peace that springs from love. Measuring our words and avoiding idle talk protects us from superficiality and impulsiveness, while teaching us to truly listen. This positive silence does not conflict with joy or with fraternal conversation during recreation, but rather fosters an inner depth so that, when we speak, we do so from the richness of prayer and to bring a word of life to others.
56 The ninth step of humility is reached when a monk refrains his tongue from speaking and, keeping silence, does not speak until he is asked, 57 for Scripture teaches that "in much speaking you will not escape sin," 58 and that "the talkative man shall not prosper upon the earth."

The Benedictine values of Montserrat

The motto Ora, Lege, Labora, Rege te ipsum, In Communitate can be read starting from its foundation to unravel the values it contains, all the way to reaching the summit, which is none other than God.

Prayer

Prayer is the center of the monks' daily routine. Through the Divine Office and the conventual Mass, the community comes together to encounter God and one another. We pray to remember that life is greater than ourselves and to find meaning in what we do.
