Saint Accas, Saint Cornelius the Centurion; Blessed Jakob Kern and Saint Irene of Portugal
Today, October 20th, we celebrate the feast of:

Saint Accas, Bishop; Saint Cornelius the Centurion; Blessed Jakob Kern, Priest; and Saint Irene of Portugal, Virgin and Martyr

Saint Accas, Bishop

He was born in Northumbria around the year 660. He was a disciple and companion of Saint Wilfrid, whom he accompanied on various journeys, including a stay in Rome. Upon returning to England, he became abbot of the Monastery of Saint Andrew at Hexham and, in 709, succeeded Wilfrid as bishop of that city. During his episcopate, he promoted the construction and renovation of churches, as well as the study of Sacred Scripture and liturgical music. He was also a friend and protector of Saint Bede, who dedicated several of his works to him. He died around the year 740 and was venerated as a saint shortly after his death.

Saint Cornelius the Centurion

According to the Acts of the Apostles, he was a centurion of the cohort known as the Italica, "a devout man who feared God with all his household, gave alms generously to the people, and prayed continually to God." He was baptized in Caesarea by the Apostle Saint Peter along with all his household, thus becoming the first Gentile to become part of the Church. Later tradition venerated him as Bishop of Caesarea.

Blessed Jakob Kern, Priest

Franz Alexander Kern was born in Vienna in 1900 into a humble working-class family. From an early age, he felt a priestly vocation and entered the seminary in Hollabrunn, but World War I interrupted his studies. Sent to the front, he suffered a severe wound that profoundly affected his health. Once recovered, he continued his priestly formation and discovered his vocation to religious life among the Premonstratensians of Geras Abbey, taking the name Jakob upon profession. He was ordained a priest in 1924, but his health rapidly deteriorated. He died that same year at the age of twenty-three, having lived through his suffering with a profound trust in God. He was beatified in 1998.

Saint Irene of Portugal, Virgin and Martyr

According to tradition, she was a Portuguese religious woman born in Santarém (Santa Irene) in the 7th century. According to legend, when a young man in love with her learned that she had taken a vow of virginity to become a nun, he killed her and threw her body into the river.
