Saint Luke
Today, October 18th, we celebrate the feast of:

Saint Luke, Evangelist

Luke is presented by ancient Christian tradition as a cultured man and a physician by profession, coming from the Greek Jewish world, and a companion of Saint Paul at various points during his mission. Saint Paul refers to him as "the beloved physician" in the Letter to the Colossians. Tradition also attributes to him the Gospel bearing his name and the Acts of the Apostles—two works that form a single narrative: the life and preaching of Jesus and, after his resurrection, the spread of the Gospel from Jerusalem to Rome. He is considered the most "historical" evangelist of the four, being very meticulous in presenting historical truth, albeit naturally interpreted through the lens of faith. He is also the most precise in psychological description, and his reputation as a painter likely derives from this quality.

His Gospel particularly emphasizes Jesus' attention toward the poor, sinners, the sick, and women, presenting salvation as good news intended for all. He is also the evangelist who passed down some of the most beloved accounts of Jesus' infancy, such as the Annunciation, the Visitation, and the Magnificat, as well as several parables, including those of the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son. Traditionally, in iconography, he is represented by an ox, a symbol of sacrifice, because his Gospel opens with Zechariah exercising his priestly ministry in the temple, a place of animal sacrifice.
