Saint Ignatius of Antioch, Bishop and Martyr, and Saint Florentius of Orange, Bishop
Saint Ignatius of Antioch, Bishop and Martyr
He called himself Theophorus ("God-bearer"). He was Bishop of Antioch in Syria between the years 70 and 107. Antioch was one of the principal cities of the Roman Empire, and it was precisely there that, according to the Acts of the Apostles, the disciples of Jesus were called Christians for the first time. During the persecution under Emperor Trajan, Ignatius was condemned to die in Rome and undertook the long journey to the city under guard. Along the way, he visited several Christian communities and addressed seven letters to them, which have been preserved to this day and constitute one of the most important testimonies of the life of the early Christian communities. He is the first Christian author to refer to the Church as "Catholic." Furthermore, he defined the threefold ministry of bishops, priests, and deacons. No Father of the Church has expressed with the intensity of Ignatius the longing for union with Christ and life in Him. He himself expressed his desire to give his life for Christ and, according to tradition, died devoured by wild beasts in Rome around the year 107.
He belongs to the group of early Christian writers known as the "Apostolic Fathers"—that is, those who were direct disciples of the Apostles and continuers of the foundational work of the Church, and of whom it cannot be ruled out that they might have known Jesus Himself.
Saint Florentius of Orange, Bishop
Born in the 5th century, he received monastic formation. He was likely abbot of the Monastery of La Clastre, near Orange, before being elected bishop of that city after the year 500. During his episcopate, he worked to restore the diocese, which had been affected by the invasions of the Germanic tribes, and to rebuild its churches. In 509, when the Ostrogoths occupied Orange, Florentius endured a brief exile. He died around the year 524.
