[cos] => Today, October 16th, we celebrate the feast of:
Saint Hedwig, Religious; Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, Virgin; and Saint Galderic or Galdric, Layman
Saint Hedwig, Religious
Born in Bavaria around 1174 into a family of high nobility, she married Henry the Bearded, Duke of Silesia, with whom she had seven children. Despite her high social standing, she devoted herself particularly to caring for the poor and the sick, promoting the founding of hospitals and other charitable works: "True royalty consists in serving the poorest." She also favored the establishment of religious communities, including the Cistercian monastery of Trebnitz, where one of her daughters, Gertrude, eventually became abbess.
After the death of her husband in 1238, Hedwig retired to the monastery of Trebnitz, where she spent her final years in prayer and austerity. She died in 1243 and was canonized in 1267. She is especially venerated in Poland and Silesia, where her figure remains closely tied to the history and Christian tradition of these lands.
Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, Virgin
Born in Vérosvres, Burgundy, in 1647, at the age of twenty-four she entered the Visitation Monastery in Paray-le-Monial. During her years there, she recounted several mystical experiences in which Christ reportedly revealed His love to her in a particular way and entrusted her with spreading devotion to His Sacred Heart. These experiences took place mainly between late 1673 and June 1675.
The mission Margaret Mary understood she had received contributed decisively to the expansion of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus: "The Heart of Jesus will take care of you to the extent that you trust and abandon yourself to Him." In this endeavor, she had the support of the Jesuit Saint Claude de la Colombière, who met her in Paray-le-Monial and helped her discern and spread the meaning of her spiritual experiences. She rested in the peace of the Lord in 1690 and was canonized in 1920.
Saint Galderic or Galdric, Layman
He was an Occitan peasant who lived probably in the 9th century. According to tradition, he originated from the region of Carcassonne and worked the land alongside his brothers. He was especially known for his devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and for his simple life dedicated to work. He died on October 16th, probably around the year 900. His cult spread particularly through Roussillon and later through many regions of Catalonia, where he was venerated as the patron saint of farmers. Over time, his patronage was replaced in many areas by that of Saint Isidore, but devotion to Saint Galderic has remained particularly alive in Northern Catalonia and several Catalan counties.
