Saint Teresa of Jesus
Today, October 15th, we celebrate the feast of:

Saint Teresa of Jesus, Virgin and Doctor of the Church

Teresa de Cepeda y Ahumada was born in Ávila in 1515. At the age of twenty, she entered the Carmelite Monastery of the Incarnation, where she lived an intense experience of prayer and spiritual life. Her relationship with God was grounded especially in mental prayer, which she defined as "an intimate sharing between friends, taking time frequently to be alone with the One who we know loves us." Over time, this experience led her to undertake a profound reform of Carmelite life, marked by prayer, poverty, and community life. In 1562, she founded the first monastery of Discalced Carmelites in Ávila, and subsequently went on to establish seventeen communities.

Teresa was also an exceptional writer, standing out as one of the great mystics and literary figures of the modern era. Among her works, The Book of Her Life, The Way of Perfection, and The Interior Castle are particularly prominent, in which she describes the soul's journey toward communion with God. Despite her frail health, she was a woman of immense energy and traveled throughout much of Castile to promote the reform. She died in Alba de Tormes in 1582. She was canonized in 1622 and proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1970.
