Saint Callixtus I and Saint John Ogilvie
Today, October 14th, we celebrate the feast day of Saint Callixtus I, pope and martyr; and Saint John Ogilvie, priest and martyr.

Saint Callixtus I, pope and martyr

Probably born in Rome, he was a slave who, after a period of exile and forced labor in Sardinia, regained his freedom. Pope Zephyrinus entrusted him with the administration of the main cemetery of the Church of Rome, located on the Appian Way and later known as the Catacombs of Saint Callixtus.

In the year 218, he was elected Bishop of Rome. During his pontificate, he had to face several theological and moral disputes, especially with Hippolytus of Rome. Callixtus defended the possibility of readmitting into Church communion those who had renegaded on their faith, provided they showed sincere repentance. According to tradition, he died a martyr in 222. His burial in Rome is commemorated on October 14th.

Saint John Ogilvie, priest and martyr

John Ogilvie was born in Scotland in 1579 into a Calvinist family. During his years of education on the European continent, he converted to Catholicism and, after studying at various institutions, entered the Society of Jesus in 1599. He was ordained a priest in Paris around late 1610. He returned to Scotland in 1613, at a time when practicing the Catholic faith was persecuted. He exercised his ministry there clandestinely for a little over a year until he was discovered and imprisoned. Subjected to several interrogations, he refused to recognize the king's authority in religious matters and maintained his allegiance to the Catholic faith. He was convicted of high treason and executed in Glasgow in 1615. He was canonized in 1976.
