Saint Theophilus and Saint Gerald of Aurillac
Today, October 13th, we celebrate the feast day of Saint Theophilus, bishop; and Saint Gerald of Aurillac, layman.

Saint Theophilus, bishop

Originally from Mesopotamia, around the year 169 he became the sixth bishop of Antioch after Saint Peter. A pagan by birth, he came to the Christian faith through the example of believers and the study of the Scriptures. He was one of the principal Christian apologists of the early centuries and wrote several works in defense of the faith against the doctrines and accusations brought against Christians of his time. In one of his works, he describes the mystery of God as follows: "The form of God is ineffable and inexpressible, and cannot be seen by eyes of flesh. For in glory He is incomprehensible, in greatness unfathomable, in height inconceivable, in power incomparable, in wisdom unrivaled, in goodness inimitable, in kindness unutterable."

Saint Gerald of Aurillac, layman

He was born around the year 855, the son of a count. In his lordship of Aurillac, in the Massif Central region of France, he founded the Abbey of Aurillac, which became an important precursor to the monastic renewal movement that would culminate in Cluny. Though remaining a layman, he led a life increasingly marked by prayer, austerity, and religious devotion.

He made several pilgrimages, especially to Rome, and devoted a large portion of his wealth to supporting the monastery and caring for the needy. He died in the year 909. He is remembered as an example of the responsible use of power and wealth in service to others.
