[cos] => Today, October 12th, we celebrate the feast day of Our Lady of the Pillar; Our Lady of Aparecida; and Saint Seraphin of Montegranaro, religious.
Our Lady of the Pilar
According to an ancient tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared in Zaragoza, on the banks of the Ebro River, atop a column or pillar, to the Apostle Saint James to comfort him in his evangelizing work. Tradition places this event at the very dawn of Christianity, but devotion to Saint Mary in Zaragoza is documented from at least the 7th century. Over the centuries, the Pillar became one of the main Marian shrines on the Iberian Peninsula.
On the site where tradition places that first church today stands the Basilica of the Pillar, a center of Marian faith and devotion. The image venerated there, made of wood and measuring 36 centimeters in height, is Gothic, dating from the first half of the 15th century, and rests atop a jasper pillar 1.70 meters high. Devotion to Our Lady of the Pillar holds that this column has always remained in the exact same location.
Our Lady of Aparecida
According to tradition, in 1717 three fishermen found a small terracotta image of the Immaculate Conception in their nets in the Paraíba River, in São Paulo. They brought it home and began to venerate it. Devotion to this image gradually spread, giving rise to the Shrine of Aparecida, which became one of Brazil's principal pilgrimage sites. In 1930, she was proclaimed the principal patron saint of Brazil.
Saint Seraphin of Montegranaro, Capuchin Religious
Felice de Nicola was born in Montegranaro, Italy, in 1540 into a very humble family. From a young age he worked as a shepherd, finding time for prayer and meditation in the solitude of the mountains. At the age of seventeen, he entered the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, where he received the name Seraphin. Although illiterate, his counsel was sought by people from all walks of life. He was distinguished by his simplicity, mortification, and obedience, as well as his charity toward the poor and his devotion to the Eucharist and the Blessed Virgin. He died in Ascoli on October 12, 1604, and was canonized in 1767.
