Saint Soledad Torres Acosta, Saint John XXIII, Saint Philip and Our Lady of Begoña
Today, October 11th, we celebrate the feast day of Saint Soledad Torres Acosta, virgin; Saint John XXIII, pope; Saint Philip, deacon; and Our Lady of Begoña.

Saint Soledad Torres Acosta, virgin

María Bibiana Torres Acosta, known in religious life as María Soledad, was born in Madrid in 1826. From a young age, she showed great care for the sick poor, whom she served with dedication. In 1851, the priest Miguel Martínez Sanz initiated the foundation of the Handmaids of Mary, Caregivers of the Sick (Servants of Mary, Ministers to the Sick), dedicated to caring for the sick: "caring for the sick with devotion and free of charge, preferably in their homes, seeing Christ in them."

Of the first seven sisters who joined the Institute, two died and four others left due to hardship. Miguel Martínez also left the association to enter the missions, leaving Soledad at the head of the community. With untiring dedication, she consolidated the Institute, which at her death comprised around thirty communities. She died on October 11, 1887, and was canonized in 1970.

Saint John XXIII, pope

Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was born in Sotto il Monte, in northern Italy, in 1881. He served as a priest, bishop, and diplomat for the Holy See, holding various positions before becoming Patriarch of Venice. In 1958, he was elected pope and took the name John XXIII. His brief pontificate was marked above all by his convocation of the Second Vatican Council, which he opened in 1962 to foster a renewal of Church life, making it more evangelical and closer to the people. He also worked tirelessly for peace, as reflected in his encyclical Pacem in terris. He died in Vatican City in 1963 and was canonized in 2014. Today's date coincides with the opening day of the Second Vatican Council.

Saint Philip, deacon

In the 1st century, he was one of the seven men chosen by the community in Jerusalem for the service of the brethren, men "of good standing, full of the Holy Spirit and of wisdom." Following the dispersion of the disciples, he proclaimed the Gospel in Samaria and baptized an official from the court of the Queen of Ethiopia after explaining the Scriptures to him. He later moved to Caesarea, where he hosted Saint Paul during one of his visits to the city.

Our Lady of Begoña

For over seven centuries, the image of Our Lady of Begoña has been venerated in a sanctuary set atop a hill overlooking the city of Bilbao. Remodeled and expanded several times over the centuries, the sanctuary is an important center of Marian devotion, particularly cherished by seafaring people and the inhabitants of Biscay. She is the patron saint of Biscay.
