[cos] => Today, October 9th, we celebrate the feast day of Saint Denis, bishop, and companions, martyrs; the priests Saint John Leonardi, Saint Louis Bertrand, and Saint John Henry Newman, cardinal; and we also commemorate the Patriarch Abraham and his wife Saint Sarah.
Saint Denis, bishop, and companions, martyrs
According to Saint Gregory of Tours, he was one of seven bishops sent from Rome to evangelize Gaul. Tradition presents him as the first bishop of Paris, where he suffered martyrdom alongside two members of his clergy, Rusticus and Eleutherius, likely during the persecution of Emperor Decius around the year 250. According to traditional accounts, Denis's body was thrown into the Seine, while those of his companions were buried at the site where the famous Abbey of Saint-Denis would later stand, on the outskirts of Paris.
Saint John Leonardi, priest
He was born in 1541 in Lucca, in Italian Tuscany, and was ordained a priest in 1571. There he founded a community dedicated to the catechesis of youth and adults, which gave rise to the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. In 1574, this endeavor developed into a congregation of reformed priests, the Clerics Regular of the Mother of God, who dedicated themselves especially to preaching and Christian formation.
He later moved to Rome, where he actively participated in the renewal of ecclesial life and the training of missionaries. He was one of the promoters of the Roman Seminary for the Missions, a forerunner of the future Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. He died in Rome in 1609, a victim of the plague contracted while caring for the sick, and was canonized in 1938.
Saint Lluís Bertran, priest
He was a Valencian Dominican priest who, for seven years, preached the Gospel among the indigenous peoples of South America. His missionary work was accompanied by a defense of the rights of indigenous peoples against the abuses of colonizers. Returning to Valencia, he continued his religious life and served as prior of the Convent of Saint Dominic. He died in 1581 and was canonized in 1671. He is venerated especially in Valencia, of which he is the patron saint.
Saint John Henry Newman, cardinal
He was born in London in 1801. A theologian, professor at Oxford University, writer, and poet, he became one of the most prominent figures of the Oxford Movement, which sought a spiritual renewal within the Church of England. His study of the Church Fathers and theological research led him progressively toward the Catholic faith, converting to Catholicism in 1845. In Rome, he was ordained a priest and joined the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri. Returning to England, he devoted much of his life to preaching, Christian formation, and pastoral care.
For a time he lived in Dublin, where he helped found the Catholic University of Ireland. Back in England, he continued his work at the Birmingham Oratory. He was created cardinal in 1879, honoring his wish not to be appointed a bishop. He died in 1890 and was canonized in 2019. He is commemorated by Anglicans on August 11, the anniversary of his death.
Patriarch Abraham and his wife Saint Sarah
Abraham, a native of Ur of the Chaldeans, heard God's call: "Go from your country, your people and your father's household to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation." And simply, "he went, as the Lord had told him," toward the land of Canaan, a stranger in a foreign land. God promised him a new land and numerous descendants.
One of the most famous episodes in his life is the test in which God asked him to offer his son Isaac. Just as he was about to sacrifice him, an angel of the Lord stopped him and saved the boy's life. Abraham is remembered in Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions as the father of faith.
Sarah, Abraham's wife, also shared in the fulfillment of God's promise. God promised Abraham that his wife would bear a son, and Sarah indeed became the mother of Isaac. In the New Testament, Sarah is presented as a symbol of faith and trust in God.
