Saint Francis of Assisi
Today, October 4th, we celebrate the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi, religious.

Saint Francis of Assisi, religious

Francis was born in Assisi in the year 1182, the son of a wealthy cloth merchant. In his youth he dreamed of a knight's life, but an illness and several experiences during war led him to rethink the meaning of his life. After a period of prayer and solitude, he decided to renounce his possessions and dedicate himself to preaching the Gospel, living in poverty and fraternity. A group of companions gathered around him, with whom he founded the Order of Friars Minor, later called Franciscans, which soon spread to various places. Together with Saint Clare, he also established the community of the Poor Ladies, the future Poor Clares, and later promoted a way of evangelical life for laypeople.

Francis deeply loved creation, which he viewed as a reflection of the Creator's goodness. This worldview is expressed in the Canticle of the Sun, which is traditionally attributed to him. His burning love for Christ, also expressed in the living nativity scene during Christmas of 1223, led the "poverello" to desire to fully conform himself to Jesus. According to tradition, he received the stigmata, becoming the first saint in history to bear the marks of the wounds of Christ. Also called "God's fool" (or "the jester of God"), he was a witness to the joy of faith and dedicated his life to bringing the Gospel to those who did not know it.

He wished to die naked, lying on the bare earth. He fell asleep in the Lord on October 3, 1226, after bidding farewell to "Sister Death." He was canonized two years later and is also a patron saint of Italy.
