Holy Guardian Angels, Saint Saturius and the Mare de Déu de l'Acadèmia
Today, October 2nd, we celebrate the feast day of the Holy Guardian Angels; Saint Saturius, layman; and the Mare de Déu de l'Acadèmia or Verge Blanca de Lleida.

Holy Guardian Angels

Tradition views angels as servants and messengers of God who also have the mission of accompanying and protecting human beings. The memory of the guardian angels thus reminds us of this closeness of God, who accompanies each person on the path of life. As Saint Bernard expressed: "Angels are present by your side, and not only with you, but they are also for you."

The feast of the guardian angels developed especially during the Middle Ages. In Valencia, a feast was already celebrated in the 15th century, which contributed to spreading this devotion.

Saint Saturius, layman

In the 6th century, he lived retired as a hermit in a cave located near Soria, a city of which he is the patron saint. He lived there for thirty years, dedicated to prayer and mortification. Tradition also tells that Saint Prudentius, who would later become Bishop of Tarazona, met him during his youth and received teaching and spiritual guidance from him. The cave where he is believed to have lived became a place of worship and pilgrimage.

La Verge Blanca de l'Acadèmia de Lleida

This is a Marian advocation linked to the city of Lleida and, especially, to its academic and cultural tradition. La Verge Blanca is the patron saint of the Acadèmia Mariana de Lleida, founded in 1862 with the purpose of fostering devotion to the Mare de Déu and Christian culture. In 1946, Pope Pius XII proclaimed her patron saint in perpetuity of the city of Lleida.
