Santa Teresa de l'Infant Jesús, virgin and doctor
Teresa of Lisieux, also known as Santa Teresa del Nen Jesús, was born in Alençon, France, on January 2, 1873. She was orphaned of her mother when she was four years old and, shortly after, the family moved to Lisieux. At the age of fifteen, she entered the Carmel, where she took the name of Teresa del Nen Jesús i de la Santa Faç. There she lived a simple and intense religious life, marked by prayer, trust in God, and the path of 'spiritual childhood': recognizing oneself as small before God and surrendering with trust to His love. Her spirituality was also marked by the experience of the darkness of faith and by a deep desire to live in the service of the Church. Not being understood by her sisters at Carmel, Teresa stated that she had received 'more thorns than roses', but she patiently accepted the injustices she suffered, as well as the pain caused by her illness, offering it 'for the needs of the Church' and 'to shower roses upon everyone, righteous and sinners alike'.
Teresa died of tuberculosis in 1897, at the age of twenty-four. She left three autobiographical manuscripts, in addition to letters, poems, and other writings, which were widely circulated after her death. She was canonized in 1925 and, in 1927, was proclaimed patron saint of the missions, even though she had never left her convent. In 1997, on the centenary of her death, she was proclaimed Doctor of the Church.
Dedication of the Catedral de Mallorca
Following the conquest of Mallorca by King Jaume I in 1229, Bishop Berenguer de Palou consecrated the high altar of the cathedral in 1230, in the space that until then had been occupied by the Muslim mosque. During the reign of Jaume II, the construction of the new cathedral began, a grand project that stretched across centuries. The final keystone was placed in 1587, and the Renaissance main portal was blessed in 1601, the year in which the cathedral was also consecrated.
