[cos] => Today, September 30th, we celebrate the feast of: Saint Jerome, priest and doctor; and Saint Sophia, widow and martyr.
Saint Jerome, priest and Doctor of the Church
He was born around the year 345 in Stridon, on the border between Dalmatia and Pannonia, into a Christian family that provided him with a solid education. After studying in Rome and receiving baptism, he embraced the eremitic life for a time in the Chalcis desert, in Syria, where, in addition to devoting himself to prayer, he deepened his study of Sacred Scripture and his knowledge of Greek and Hebrew. He was ordained a priest in Antioch and also resided in Constantinople, where he expanded his theological training.
In the year 382, he returned to Rome and entered the service of Pope Damasus I, who commissioned him to revise the Latin versions of the Bible. From this work emerged the biblical text known as the Vulgate, which became the primary Latin translation of the Bible in the West. After Pope Damasus died, Jerome left Rome and, in 386, settled permanently in Bethlehem, where he promoted monastic life, lived with great austerity, and tirelessly continued his work of translating and commenting on Sacred Scripture, as well as devoting himself to preaching and spiritual direction. He died in Bethlehem on September 30 in the year 419 or 420. Saint Jerome is, alongside Saint Ambrose, Saint Augustine, and Saint Gregory the Great, one of the four great Doctors of the Western Church.
Saint Sophia, widow and martyr
Her name means “wisdom.” According to tradition, she was a Christian widow in Rome who, during the persecution under Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century, witnessed her three daughters, Faith, Hope, and Charity, being martyred for their faith. Sophia distributed her goods among the poor and, after burying her daughters, died a few days later. Tradition places her burial site on the Via Aurelia in Rome.
