[cos] => Today, September 19th, we celebrate the feast of: Saint Januarius, bishop and martyr; Saint Mary of Cervelló, virgin; and Our Lady of La Salette.
Saint Januarius, bishop and martyr
According to tradition, he was Bishop of Benevento and was martyred in Pozzuoli, near Naples, during the persecution of Diocletian, around the year 305. While visiting his friend Sosius, a deacon of Misenum, in prison, he was arrested along with other Christians and, after refusing to sacrifice to the gods, was condemned to death by beheading. His cult is very ancient and especially intense in Naples, where his blood is venerated, preserved in a vial and the subject of the well-known phenomenon of its liquefaction on certain dates of the year.
Saint Mary of Cervelló, virgin
Of noble origin, she was born in Barcelona in 1230, probably the daughter of Bernat Guillem de Cervelló. When the Mercedarian chapter meeting in Tarragona approved, in 1265, the creation of a female branch of the order without the fourth vow, she asked to be admitted along with other noble women and professed shortly thereafter. She was elected superior of the first female Mercedarian community and dedicated her life to the service of the poor, the sick, and seafarers, for which reason she became known as Mary of Succour. Various miracles were attributed to her intercession. She died in Barcelona in 1290 and was buried in her convent; in 1384 her remains were transferred to the Church of Mercy. Her cult was approved in 1692.
Our Lady of La Salette
An invocation linked to the apparition of the Virgin Mary to two shepherd children, Maximin Giraud and Mélanie Calvat, on September 19, 1846, in a mountain of the Alps, near the village of La Salette. The Virgin transmitted a message of conversion and penance to them. After five years of rigorous investigation, the Bishop of Grenoble, Philibert de Bruillard, recognized its authenticity on September 19, 1851. The following year he announced the construction of a sanctuary at the site of the apparition, which became a center of pilgrimage.
