Saint Robert Bellarmine, Saint Hildegard and dedication of the Cathedral of Vic
Today, September 17, we celebrate the feast of: Saint Robert Bellarmine, cardinal, bishop, and Doctor of the Church;Saint Hildegard, virgin and Doctor of the Church; and the dedication of the Cathedral of Vic.The Cathedral of Our Lady of Victory | Victoria, TX+ 1Saint Robert Bellarmine, Cardinal, Bishop, and Doctor of the Church He was born in Montepulciano, Tuscany, in the year 1542, into a noble family. Although his father wanted him to pursue politics, he joined the Society of Jesus and became a prominent theologian. He taught in Louvain and Rome and later held various responsibilities in the Roman Curia, where he stood out for his theological knowledge and diplomatic skills. He was created cardinal in 1599 and Archbishop of Capua in 1602. Despite the high responsibilities he held, he was distinguished by his simplicity of life and dedication to prayer and pastoral ministry. He died in Rome in 1621. He was canonized in 1930 and proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1931.
Saint Hildegard von Bingen, Virgin and Doctor of the Church
Born in Bermersheim, in the Palatinate, around the year 1098, she was the tenth child of a noble family. At eight years old, she was entrusted to the Benedictine community of Disibodenberg, and in 1136, she was elected abbess. A mystic and visionary, she also stood out for her organizational capacity and her commitment to the renewal of Church life. She founded the monasteries of Rupertsberg and Eibingen and maintained an intense activity of letter-writing and preaching. Her mystical experiences gave rise to several theological writings, most notably Scivias, in which she describes and interprets twenty-six visions. She was also interested in medicine and natural sciences, and composed numerous musical pieces, convinced that music made with earthly instruments could evoke the heavenly harmony that reigned in Paradise before original sin. She died in Rupertsberg on September 17, 1179. Venerated as a saint since ancient times, she was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 2012.
Dedication of the Cathedral of Vic
The earliest records of the Christian community of Ausa, ancient Vic, date back to the 6th century. The episcopal see was restored during the 9th and 10th centuries, and in the 11th century, Bishop and Abbot Oliba completely rebuilt the Cathedral of Saint Peter, consecrated in 1038. The bell tower and the crypt still remain from that Romanesque temple. The current cathedral, built in the Neoclassical style, replaced the medieval building and was consecrated on September 15, 1803; the anniversary of its dedication is liturgically celebrated on September 17.
