Our Lady of Sorrows and Saint Nicomedes
Today, September 15th, we celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, under the titles of Piety, Solitude, Pious, Mary of the Cross, and Our Lady of the Sea; and that of Saint Nicomedes, martyr.
Our Lady of Sorrows
The day after the feast of the Holy Cross, we contemplate Mary’s sorrow in following her Son, a sorrow that culminates at the foot of the Cross as she watches his death. There, the prophecy of Simeon is fulfilled, who had foretold that a sword would pierce her soul. Mary’s sorrow shows how fidelity to Jesus' path also involves sharing in the hardship and darkness of his Cross, in order to reach life with him. "Stabat Mater dolorosa iuxta crucem lacrimosa dum pendebat Filius" ("The sorrowful Mother stood weeping beside the cross while her Son was hanging").
Christian tradition contemplates the Seven Sorrows of Mary, the seven events in the life of Jesus that caused her suffering: the prophecy of Simeon, the flight into Egypt, the loss of the Child Jesus in Jerusalem, meeting Jesus on the way to Calvary, her presence at the foot of the Cross, taking down Jesus' body into Mary's arms, and her solitude at her Son's burial.
The tradition of Mary’s Sorrows has given rise to numerous titles, such as Our Lady of Bitterness, of Piety, the Sorrowful Mother, Solitude, and Mary of the Cross. We also find Our Lady of the Sea, a very ancient title linked to seafaring people that has given rise to the name Mar.
Saint Nicomedes, martyr
According to an ancient tradition, Nicomedes was a Roman priest who, during the persecution of Emperor Domitian, was discovered burying Christians killed for their faith. Arrested and forced to sacrifice to the pagan gods, he refused and was beaten to death with whips. His body was thrown into the Tiber, but a fellow cleric recovered it and buried it on the Via Nomentana. Devotion to him is very ancient: by the 5th century, there was already a church dedicated to him in Rome, and Pope Boniface V honored his tomb with a sepulchral basilica.
