Today, September 14th, we celebrate the feast of:
The Exaltation of the Holy Cross
The feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross originates in Jerusalem and is linked to the dedication, in the year 335, of the Basilica of the Resurrection, built by Emperor Constantine over the site of Calvary and near the tomb of Jesus. The celebration also became closely tied to the veneration of the relic of the Cross, traditionally discovered by Saint Helena. Thus, what had been an instrument of death becomes, for Christians, a source of life: on the Cross of Jesus, death has been conquered, and the way to resurrection and eternal life has been opened forever.
Pope Francis, during the Angelus on September 14, 2014, explained the meaning of this feast as follows: “Someone might ask us: why exalt the cross? We can respond that we do not exalt just any cross, or all crosses. We exalt the Cross of Jesus because in it God’s love for humanity was revealed to the utmost (...). The Cross seems to pronounce the failure of Jesus, but in reality, it marks his victory. On Calvary, those who mocked him said: 'If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.' But the opposite was true: precisely because he was the Son of God, Jesus was there on the Cross, completely faithful to the Father’s plan of love. (...) Through the Cross of Christ, the evil one has been defeated, death is conquered, life has been given to us, and hope has been restored to us (...) The Cross of Jesus is our only true hope! This is why the Church exalts the Holy Cross, and this is why we Christians bless ourselves with the sign of the Cross".
