Saint John Chrysostom
Today, September 13th, we celebrate the feast day of:
Saint John Chrysostom, Bishop of Constantinople and Doctor of the Church
Our saint is counted among the most prolific Fathers of the Church, considered—together with Saint Basil and Saint Gregory of Nazianzus—one of the Three Holy Hierarchs of the Byzantine liturgical tradition.
Born in Antioch around the year 349, he received a fine humanistic and Christian education. Baptized as an adult, he lived for some years as a hermit and later joined the clergy of Antioch. He was ordained a priest and soon distinguished himself as an outstanding preacher, to the extent of receiving the surname Chrysostom, meaning "golden-mouthed": “I had thought you would grow tired of my sermons because I speak too much. Instead, I realize the opposite is true: the long length of the discourse was not a cause of annoyance, but served to increase your desire to listen (...) Last Sunday (...), when my discourse went on far longer than usual, many believed your zeal would cool, (...) but the opposite happened: your heart only became more fervent and your desire more ardent.”
In 397, upon the death of the Patriarch of Constantinople, he was chosen as his successor. Possessing great practical and organizational talent, he stayed above the intrigues of the imperial city; through his just and coherent stance, he earned powerful enemies. “To be sure, there are many who keep telling me: "You are attacking the rich." It is they who attack the poor! Do I attack the rich? I do not attack the rich, but those who misuse wealth. I never tire of repeating that I do not condemn the wealthy man, but the thief. An opulent person is one thing, a greedy person another. Distinguish between things and do not confuse what should not be confused. Are you rich? Congratulations! Are you a thief? I condemn you! Do you have what is yours? Enjoy it! Do you seize what belongs to another? I will not stay silent! Do you wish to stone me? I am ready to shed my blood if thereby I prevent your sin.”
In 397 he was elected bishop and patriarch of Constantinople. Possessing great practical and organizational capacity, he denounced the abuses of the powerful and defended the poor, which earned him hostility among political and ecclesiastical officials. “To be sure, there are many who keep telling me: "You are attacking the rich." It is they who attack the poor! Do I attack the rich? I do not attack the rich, but those who misuse wealth. I never tire of repeating that I do not condemn the wealthy man, but the thief. An opulent person is one thing, a greedy person another. Distinguish between things and do not confuse what should not be confused. Are you rich? Congratulations! Are you a thief? I condemn you! Do you have what is yours? Enjoy it! Do you seize what belongs to another? I will not stay silent!”
In 403 he was deposed and briefly sent into exile. After his return, his criticism of the imperial court led to renewed persecution, and in 406 he was exiled once again, this time to Cucusus in Armenia. Later ordered to move toward Pontus, he died during the journey at Comana on September 14, 407. His last words, according to tradition, were: “Glory to God for all things.” He was rehabilitated in 438, and his relics were translated to Constantinople. He is one of the Three Holy Hierarchs of the Byzantine liturgical tradition, alongside Saint Basil the Great and Saint Gregory of Nazianzus, and is venerated as a Doctor of the Church.
