Abadía de Montserrat - EN 3 November 2026
Tuesday, November 3, 2026. The Abadia de Montserrat has scheduled another concert for the Montserrat Music Festival, to be held on Saturday, November 21st at 9:00 PM in the Basilica of Santa Maria de Montserrat.

Entitled "Nigra Sum," in homage to the piece composed by Pau Casals in 1943 in devotion to the Moreneta, the program draws inspiration from the millennia-old tradition of the Escolania de Montserrat, which has allowed us at various times to enjoy major sacred works written for white-voice choir and organ.

Accordingly, the concert will take listeners on a journey through 19th- and 20th-century classical and symphonic-choral music with works by Mendelssohn, Brahms, Schubert, and Pau Casals. More than 150 performers will take part in the musical proposal, specifically the junior section of the Jove Orquestra Nacional de Catalunya (JONC), the Cor Infantil Amics de la Unió, and the Cor Jove Amics de la Unió, all under the direction of Manel Valdivieso.

Jove Orquestra Nacional de Catalunya, Juniors

JONC Alevins was established in 1997 following the success of JONC, with Manel Valdivieso as artistic director. Like JONC, it is part of the Fundació Jove Orquestra Nacional de Catalunya, presided over by the conseller d'Educació of the Generalitat de Catalunya.

Veus - Cor Infantil Amics de la Unió

The choir was founded in 1996 through the initiative of the Escola de Música created within the Societat Coral Amics de la Unió de Granollers. Directed by Josep Vila i Jover since its inception, this treble choir is distinguished by the quality, eclecticism, and uniqueness of its productions. It has been the resident choir of the Teatre Auditori de Granollers since 2017.

Cor Jove Amics de la Unió

Directed by Marta Dosaiguas, the Cor Jove Amics de la Unió of Granollers brings together some 50 young people aged 18 to 26 in a mixed-voice formation. Most of them come from Veus - Cor Infantil Amics de la Unió or music schools in the Vallès Oriental region.

Direcció

Manel Valdivieso has served as artistic director of JONC since 2001. Born in Barcelona, he pursued his musical studies at the Escolania de Montserrat and the conservatories of Badalona and Barcelona. He completed his training by studying analysis with Benet Casablancas and orchestral conducting with Antoni Ros-Marbà. He has conducted leading spanish orchestras, enjoyed a successful operatic career, and currently teaches at the Conservatori Superior del Liceu (Barcelona).

At the Abadia de Montserrat, we foster emerging musical careers, and this event stands as a testament to our support for youth talent. It will be a concert that resonates through a mosaic of young performers giving voice and music to a top-tier repertoire.

Admission to the concert is free, sponsored by the Ajuntament de Manresa and the Ajuntament d'Abrera.
