Sunday, September 27, 2026.- The Schola Cantorum of Montserrat has experienced one of the most significant moments of its academic year: the clothing ceremony for the new members joining the choir.

During a celebration at 12:45 p.m. this Saturday, September 26, at the Basilica of Santa Maria de Montserrat, a total of nine choristers—specifically five girls and four boys—wore the saia and roquet (the traditional vestments of the Montserrat choristers) for the first time, taking the places of the nine members who completed their tenure last year. Notably, among this group of new additions, three of the boys already know what it is like to wear the saia and roquet, as they are former students of the Escolania.

With these new voices, the Schola Cantorum once again has a total of 33 singers for this 2026–2027 academic year: 16 boys and 17 girls. The choir is partially renewed each year through a dynamic that reflects the customary operation of the group, as its members—young music students—can renew their commitment annually until they reach 25, the maximum age to belong to the choir. In this sense, the academic mobility of its members leads to this annual renewal and rebalancing of voices to configure the choir.

Following the clothing ceremony, the Schola Cantorum performed the singing of the Salve and the Virolai for the first time this academic year.

At the service of the sanctuary since 2023

The Schola Cantorum of the Escolania de Montserrat was founded during the 2023–2024 academic year with the vision of establishing a mixed choir at Montserrat. As part of the liturgical service in the basilica, this youth choir—directed by Pau Jorquera and composed of singers aged 17 to 24—contributes its music one weekend a month. In this way, the main choristers can rest when the Schola Cantorum sings at Montserrat.

The choir participates in the Sanctuary's regular religious celebrations, such as the Salve and Virolai on Saturday noon, the Office of Vespers on Saturday afternoon, and the Conventual Mass on Sunday morning. Its repertoire is based on the recovery of the musical heritage of Catalan chapels, with special attention to works from the Montserrat School, Renaissance polyphony, and newly composed sacred music.
