Chapter 20

Regla de Sant Benet

Pure and brief prayer. We must approach God with profound humility, reverence, and pure self-giving. We shall not be heard for our abundance of words, but for the uprightness of our hearts and compunction—that is, through our honesty in recognizing our limitations. For this reason, personal prayer should generally be brief and transparent, unless the Holy Spirit inflames our heart with the gift of grace. Leaving behind pride and idle talk, opening our innermost selves to the Lord in a simple and authentic manner draws us into the path of full contemplation and true communion.
¹ If when we wish to request something from powerful people we do not presume to do so except with humility and reverence, ² how much more ought we to address our supplications to the Lord, God of all things, with all humility and pure devotion. ³ And let us know that we shall be heard, not for our many words, but for our purity of heart and tears of compunction. ⁴ Therefore, prayer should be short and pure, unless perchance it be prolonged under the inspiration of divine grace. ⁵ In community, however, let prayer be very short, and when the superior gives the signal, let everyone rise together.
