Chapter 18:1-6
Regla de Sant Benet
Allowing Ourselves to Be Steeped in Divine Law. The recitation of the long wisdom Psalm 118 during the Minor Hours seeks to anchor the Word at the very heart of the day. This chapter does not merely establish a structure of prayer, but aims to imbue the day with the wisdom and steadfastness that flow from the Divine Law. This patient and daily practice transforms the verses into an interior foundation, reminding us that only through diligent listening to the will of God does our life find guidance, steadfastness, and a sure path of love and fidelity.
¹ First of all, the verse "O God, come to my assistance; O Lord, make haste to help me" shall be said, followed by the Gloria and the hymn for each hour. ² Then, at Prime on Sunday, four sections of Psalm 118 are to be said, ³ but at the other hours—namely Terce, Sext, and None—three sections of the aforementioned Psalm 118 shall be said. ⁴ At Prime on Monday, three psalms are to be said: the first, the second, and the sixth; ⁵ and so each day, until Sunday, three psalms shall be said at Prime in numerical order up to Psalm 19, in such a way, however, that Psalm 9 and Psalm 17 are divided into two parts. ⁶ Thus it comes about that at the Sunday Vigils the psalmody can always begin with the twentieth.
