Chapter 7:49-50

Regla de Sant Benet

Ceasing to Be Gods. Renouncing vain ambitions, appearances, and the urge to stand out is not a sign of failure, but of authentic inner freedom. Saint Benedict invites us to be content with the simplest and lowest when it comes, to stop climbing ladders, and to accept our condition as simple, limited workers. This poverty of spirit—knowing ourselves to often be foolish before God like a "beast of burden" rather than gods at the center of creation—frees us from consumerism and pride, releases us from discouragement, and reminds us that, even in dryness or weariness, we are never separated from God and his love.
49 The sixth step of humility is reached when a monk is content with the lowest and most abject conditions, and regards himself as an unskilled and unworthy worker in everything assigned to him, 50 saying to himself with the prophet: "I was brought to nothing and knew nothing; I was like a brute beast before you, yet I am always with you."
