Monday The Exaltation of the Holy Cross (Nm 21, 4b-9)
The Book of Numbers tells us that during their journey through the desert, the people spoke ill of God because of the hardship of life. The snakes that bit them were synonymous with death; in the Bible, the serpent will always represent something abject. The cross is also abject; but just as a representation of the serpent saved the life of whoever looked at it, as it tells us: "Moses made a bronze serpent and set it up as a standard; and whenever anyone who had been bitten looked at the bronze serpent, they recovered".; so too whoever looks at the cross, whoever accepts it, will begin to discover the path of salvation. Today we can remember the chant of Good Friday that the Church proposes we sing again today: We should glory in the cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have salvation, life, and resurrection; he has saved us and set us free.
